2. What kinds of historical developments brought American women into reform activities in the antebellum years?
I think that Republican Motherhood was very remarkable in expanding the educational opportunities American Women. It helped the American women to start attending schools and become educated people. Education helped them to achieve a lot more in their lives than before. Some of these educated women became writers, teachers, missionaries, and other professional people. Women also began to form groups and religious organizations for their. However, I think that the fight for women’s rights was the most significant historical development that brought American women into reform activities in the antebellum years. They fought for their rights, and this movement led to many accomplishments. In 1860 women got the permission of having economic right. They were able to buy and sell their properties, have the custody of their children when they divorced and so on.
Textbook document ( Chapter 4 pp. 242-243) – “Maria Angustias De La Guerra Ord”
1. Maria responds to the strangers she encounters with both fear and curiosity. About what is she curious? What is the source of her fear and how does Maria exhibit or conceal her reaction?
Maria was curious about whether or not the American soldiers would find Jose Antonio Chavez. She was also scared of having so many armed soldiers in her home, especially at that very late time. The other source of her fear was that American soldiers would find Chavez and she did not know what the consequences of her actions would be. However, she did not show her fear and curiosity to the Lieutenant. She told him that she was not frightened by anything and added that no one could have a rest in her home if she or he was not a member of her family. After soldiers left, her reaction to Chavez’s thankfulness was “What I have done for you today, I would do tomorrow for an American if you unjustly attempted to do him wrong," (243). I think that her respond to Chavez is very remarkable and shows what kind of a good person she was.
2. What is the source of strength that Maria draws? How does the absence of men affect the way she acts?
I think the source of strength that Maria draws is her maternal strength. Mothers are very good at helping their children or other people that are in need. The absence of men affected the way she acted a lot. Because her husband was not around, Maria felt like she was the head of the house. She took charge of everything, and was able to succeed. Maria acted very independently. The absence of her husband helped her to become stronger at making good decisions. I think that Maria De La Guerra Ord was a very smart, strong, independent, and responsible woman.

1. I feel it important to mention in your opening sentence (‘The main experiences
all the groups of women had as the United States expanded west to the Pacific Coast was their household duties to wash, cook, raise their children’) that these ‘requirements’ did not apply to all races but were mainly the duties of white women. The only black women involved in the migration were slaves, of course they would be required to help with domestic duties but I’m not sure they would have been able to travel with their own families? I agree with everything else you mentioned, the audacity of these settlers, shoving content people out of their homes and stripping them of their rights and money.
2. I agree with you about the Republican Motherhood movement helping women on their journey to improved rights and equality. I think a shift was happening in peoples perception of gender and roles in society. Women were finally being recognized for their skills and with the integration of education women were quickly proving themselves as competent and actually more suitable for certain positions, such as teachers, especially for young children and caretakers. Also the expansion of the United States both in population and economic security lead to a greater need for women to play a more equal role. I feel one of the most powerful influences in changing society was the unity the women formed. Men had been fighting and working together for years while women were mostly silenced in public and kept to themselves. Women are innately in touch with their feelings and once they felt comfortable sharing stories, similarities and ideas with each other progression evidently became unstoppable.
1. I agree with you, Maria sounds like she was a very strong woman. I’m not sure if I agree with you however when you mentioned ‘Maria was curious about whether or not the American soldiers would find Jose Antonio Chavez.’ Of course it’s a possibility but I think ‘curiosity’ is a little tame under the circumstances. For one, I think she was somewhat self assured in her plan, but I think her emotion concerning the soldiers finding Chavez would more likely be fear, even though as you mentioned she was able to conceal her emotion. I think Maria was curious about who these peoples were and why they were acting in such a terrible way.
2. I agree with you entirely on this question, I think you made some excellent points. I think it unfortunately took men being ‘out of the picture’ for women’s strengths to be realized but thank goodness they finally were. Maria signifies women can ‘do it all !’ Many women are instinctively maternal, wonderful protectors, but can also be independent, take charge, act intelligently and brilliantly. Oh and many are excellent at concealing information too, notice I didn’t say ‘lie’ I’m not sure what this particular skill would be classed as??? Depends what one is concealing I suppose!!

1) To Fiona, having her opening sentence like that would be more complete of a sentence. Hmm I do not think the black slaves were able to travel with their families, I mean they were always being separated from their families when they were sold. I agree with Fiona, it was cruel on how these settlers immediately took over the land of the Mexican descendents.
2) Yup, women were growing in every field of education. Women were able to get a better education and had economic rights. I agree women were able to express their feelings and get out there in public and let everyone know what they were fighting for because they built their own organizations.
Document:
1) For sure Maria sounded like a strong women, she was brave enough to stand against the soldiers. As for “Curiosity” it may have been both, maybe she did wonder or not she can get away with hiding Chavez. But curiosity may have meant something else, and her fear
2) Yeah I also agree with you response how unfortunate that her strength finally came out only because there were not any men around. But like you said at least her true personality and strength came out.
